Huang Yuanshuai Apples from Wafangdian
Huang Yuanshuai Apples are a registered geographical indication agricultural product.
Huang Yuanshuai Apples from Wafangdian are a specialty of Wafangdian City, Dalian, Liaoning Province. These apples are known for their thin, smooth skin, delicate flesh, abundant juice, sweet and tangy flavor, and rich aroma. They are recognized as a nationally protected geographical indication agricultural product.
Wafangdian City is situated on the western side of the Liaodong Peninsula and enjoys a temperate continental monsoon climate. Winters are not extremely cold and summers are not overly hot, with ample sunlight and moderate rainfall—ideal conditions for fruit tree growth. With over a century of apple production history, the area’s fruits are renowned both domestically and internationally for their exceptional qualities such as large size, thin skin, bright color, delicious taste, long shelf life, and excellent transportability. The per capita fruit income in rural areas exceeds 2,000 yuan, accounting for about 25% of farmers’ total income. In 1986, the city was designated by the state as a national fruit production base. In 2006, it was named a Key County (City) for High-Quality Fruit Production by the China Fruit Marketing Association, and the following year, it was ranked among China’s Top 20 Apple Producing Counties (Cities). It is widely celebrated as the “Hometown of Apples.”
Golden Delicious apples, also known as Golden Crisp, Huang Yuanshuai, Yellow Banana, or Huazhen apples, belong to the large fruit category, typically weighing between 200–350g per fruit. Unripe fruits are green, while ripe ones feature a golden-yellow skin with a red blush and tiny spots. The flesh is yellow, juicy, and crisp-sweet. According to evaluations by provincial authorities, Huang Yuanshuai apples have a soluble solids content of 14.8%, organic acid content of 0.43%, and a firmness of 55 kg per square centimeter. Their main characteristics include an elongated conical shape, with roughly three fruits per jin (500g); upon ripening, the skin turns golden with a red blush on the sun-exposed side, thin and blemish-free with a glossy finish; the flesh is fine-textured, pale yellowish-white, juicy, richly aromatic, and offers a well-balanced sweet and tangy flavor.
In 2014, the “Huang Yuanshuai Apples from Wafangdian” application submitted by the Xutun Town Fruit Storage Association of Wafangdian City passed the review of the Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and expert evaluation, leading to its registration and protection as a national geographical indication agricultural product.
