Shan Yan King Liquor
The Changtu Shan Yan Liquor has deep ties to the experiences of Nurhaci, the founding emperor of the Qing Dynasty, in Changtu Guanshan. Legend has it that in the 36th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1608 AD), Nurhaci personally led a campaign against the Yehe tribe (located between Changtu and Kaiyuan). Besieged in Changtu Guanshan, he repeatedly failed to break free, and the situation grew dire. As evening approached, local villagers offered him liquor. Just as he was about to drink heartily, suddenly a flock of wild geese flew in from the southeast while rosy clouds rose in the northwest, mirroring each other in a spectacular scene seen as an auspicious omen. He then ordered the liquor to be shared among all his troops, drinking together with his soldiers. The army’s morale soared, and soon they defeated their stubborn enemies. Later, he went on to conquer all, laying the foundation for nearly three hundred years of Qing rule. In memory of the villagers whose offering of liquor had aided him, and taking inspiration from the moment, he specially named the liquor “Shan Yan Wang” (Mountain Goose King). The Eight Banners nobility vied to drink this fine liquor, and from then on, “Shan Yan Wang” gained great renown across the Guandong region. It was praised as “Among Guandong’s finest liquors, which can rival the king? None but Shan Yan deserves the crown.” This gave rise to one of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Changtu”—“Geese Descending on Guanshan.” The story of Nurhaci “drinking through Guanshan” has been widely celebrated by the people, and thus the Shan Yan King Liquor was named and has been passed down to this day.
The aging and blending process of Shan Yan King Liquor follows specific principles. By leveraging physical, chemical, microbial environments, and the distinct characteristics of base liquors, it is combined and flavored in targeted proportions. Its uniqueness lies in implementing graded storage, aging, selection, and blending of base liquors, ensuring the flavor and quality of the final product.
Through nearly a century of continuous improvement and accumulation of brewing techniques, Shan Yan Liquor has earned a distinguished reputation in Liaoning’s northern region for its “long-lasting aroma,” “rich taste,” “sweet entry,” “smooth finish,” “harmonious balance of flavors,” “perfectly balanced,” and “comprehensive liquor character.” With its outstanding quality and distinctive flavor, Shan Yan Liquor has been awarded multiple times as a “Famous Premium Baijiu.” In 2010, it received titles such as “Famous Liquor of Liaoning,” “Well-Known Brand of Liaoning,” and “Most Popular Liquor in Tieling Region.”
