Since the last century, international coffee giants such as Nestlé have entered Yunnan, vigorously promoting the higher-yield Catimor variety to replace the traditional Typica variety for cultivation. As a result, Yunnan coffee farmers abandoned the traditional and superior Typica, and today over 90% of the coffee planted is Catimor. Front Street 2013 is one of the few coffees made from the Typica variety.

a friend asked how the Front Street Typica coffee beans are and what their flavor characteristics are. Today, let’s explore together.
Yunnan coffee has emerged in recent years, and behind it is the rise of China’s economy. The concept of specialty coffee has been in China for a long time, and more and more insightful people have been practicing telling the story of Chinese coffee. Yunnan’s coffee cultivation has begun to move towards varietal selection and breeding, and Yunnan coffee has also moved towards becoming specialty-grade. Front Street Coffee is one of them.
As early as 2013, Front Street began planting coffee in Lincang, Yunnan. From site selection, breeding, planting, to management, step by step, they made their own high-quality beans in China. The coffee beans planted by Front Street in Yunnan also serve as a commemoration, hence the name Front Street 2013. The connection between Front Street and Yunnan is a piece of history grounded in scientific basis and valuable practical value.
Lincang City is located in the southwest of Yunnan Province, bordering Pu’er to the east, Dali to the north, Baoshan to the west, and Myanmar to the southwest. It is named for being adjacent to the Lancang River and is a shining pearl on the southwestern border of the motherland. The Front Street 2013 coffee beans are of excellent appearance and have a good sweetness level. They are of the Typica variety and are processed using the most primitive and traditional post-harvest method for green coffee beans—the natural (sun-dried) processing method.
After undergoing sun-dried processing, the Typica coffee from Front Street has a richer mouthfeel, with more pronounced acidity and sweetness. It features notes of citrus and berries, along with a hint of fermented wine aroma, caramel sweetness, and a creamy aftertaste.
Therefore, besides Catimor, which is suitable for instant coffee, Yunnan also has Typica coffee with excellent flavor. Coffee lovers can give it a try.
