Lindong Mandheling

Mandheling coffee generally comes from Sumatra in Indonesia and is known for its distinctive low acidity, full body, and earthy aroma. As one of the world’s outstanding single-origin coffees, Front Street believes that brewing it using pure methods—such as pour-over, a type of drip extraction—yields an excellent cup.

What are some of Indonesia’s specialty coffees? Through word of mouth, Mandheling seems to have become synonymous with Indonesian specialty coffee. Interestingly, “Mandheling” is actually a mispronunciation of “Mandailing,” the name of an ethnic group originally from Sumatra, and does not follow the common naming conventions based on region or origin.

Mandheling coffee mainly refers to coffee grown by the Batak people at altitudes of 900–1200 meters on the southwestern shore of Lake Toba or in the Lindong mountainous area in north-central Sumatra. It is typically Typica or its variants. Generally, Mandheling is categorized by region and green bean suppliers, such as Lindong Mandheling, Golden Mandheling, King Kong Mandheling, Tiger Mandheling, Horse Face Mandheling, and more.

This producing region employs Indonesia’s unique processing method—the wet hulling method. It is precisely this rare processing technique in the world that gives Mandheling its distinctive low acidity, full body, and earthy aroma, winning it a dedicated following globally.

That’s a brief introduction to Indonesian Mandheling coffee—wondering if coffee enthusiasts will like it?
