Huaning Onions

　　Huaning onions are a specialty of Huaning County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province. Onion is one of the main agricultural and economic crops in Huaning during winter and spring, boasting a long history of cultivation in the county. The crop is characterized by “large planting area, high farming standards, high yield, and superior quality.”

　　In 2011, the onion planting area in Huaning County was 6,750 mu, including 4,500 mu in Ningzhou Subdistrict, 2,200 mu in Panxi Town, and 50 mu in Qinglong Town. The onions planted in Ningzhou and Qinglong are mainly purple-skinned, while those in Panxi are white-skinned. The onions from Ningzhou and Qinglong are expected to be available in late February 2011, while those from Panxi will hit the market in March.
