Magical Lacquer Wax Delicacies
Lacquer wax is produced in Fugong, Gongshan, and Lushui counties of the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, as well as in Lanping Bai and Pumi Autonomous Prefecture, with Fugong County being the largest producer.
Known locally as "lacquer oil," lacquer wax is extracted from the seeds of the lacquer tree. Once cooled, the oil solidifies into blocks and is slightly lighter in color than yellow wax, which is why it’s also commercially referred to as lacquer wax. It is edible, and its preparation methods continue to evolve. Some people melt the wax and mix it with lard, vegetable oil, or walnuts in a ratio of about 2:1. Once cooled, it solidifies into a convenient, portable block. Local residents also use this wax as a gift to exchange among friends and family.
The Lisu and Nu people in the valley use piping hot lacquer oil to stir-fry rice wine and young chicken, creating nourishing dishes for patients or new mothers that are highly effective in boosting energy and vitality. Others mix lacquer wax with honey and shell threads, then steam the mixture for consumption, which is said to treat tuberculosis and bronchitis.
