Tuenyiu Chili Peppers
Tuenyiu was historically known as the “Land of Abundant Grain,” and today is famed as the “County of Vegetables.” Thanks to its fertile soil, abundant water, and large diurnal temperature variations, the area has ideal conditions for vegetable cultivation—especially solanaceous vegetables such as green peppers and chili peppers, which are particularly premium. Their characteristics include large, uniform size, bright color, thick flesh, no pollution, no pests, and easy storage. The chili peppers are slender with few seeds, offering a fragrant, spicy, numbing, and fresh taste. There are currently the Yayer Yan Chili Pepper Market and the Xi Li Gao Green Pepper Wholesale Market, along with three large vegetable cold storage facilities, with a total capacity of 7,500 cubic meters, dedicated to the transshipment and short-term storage of the county’s vegetables for export.
The local area also has a farmers' brokers association, specifically coordinating the outward transport of vegetables. During the peak production season from July to September, which coincides with the “dormancy” period of out-of-province vegetables, outbound transport vehicles come in an endless stream. Green peppers and chili peppers are continuously shipped to cities and provinces such as Shanghai, Guangdong, and Hainan, where they are highly favored by customers.
