Chaling County is a semi-mountainous and hilly region with abundant grassland resources and a long history of raising yellow cattle. In 1999, it was designated by the provincial government as a base county for the development of herbivorous livestock. In 2011, "Chaling Yellow Cattle" was recognized as a geographical indication by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce. To promote advanced scientific breeding techniques and accelerate the development of the local yellow cattle industry, the county government decided to hire Mr. Xu Shangzhong, researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Vice President of the Chinese Cattle Breeding Association, and Vice President of the China Fine Yellow Cattle Breeding Committee, as the Chief Technical Advisor for Yellow Cattle Farming in Chaling County. His main role is to provide scientific guidance to large-scale cattle farmers. On July 9, the county government issued him an appointment letter with a tenure of 10 years.
It is reported that Chaling County is a major agricultural area where farmers across the region have a tradition of raising yellow cattle. Bred through natural grazing, Chaling Yellow Cattle features tender meat, a delicious flavor, high protein content, low fat, and is rich in amino acids and mineral elements, earning a strong reputation both domestically and internationally. Since the new century, the development of beef cattle farming in Chaling County has accelerated rapidly. The county now has six beef cattle breeding zones, covering all 14 towns, with 23 villages engaged in large-scale cattle farming. The county maintains a year-round stock of over 700 yellow cattle, with 13 large-scale breeders raising over 100 cattle each and 36 raising over 50. In 2011, the county raised a total of 42,000 yellow cattle and marketed 18,000.
Chaling Yellow Cattle enjoys widespread popularity among consumers in the market. In March 2011, it was certified as a geographical indication by the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, and the "Chaling Yellow Cattle" trademark was registered. This also serves as a unique brand advantage for the development of the yellow cattle industry.
