Exhibition Hall of Quaternary Glacial Relics of China

The Exhibition Hall of Quaternary Glacial Relics of China serves as a base for science education and patriotic education.

Destination Introduction

The Exhibition Hall of Quaternary Glacial Relics of China is located next to the Quaternary glacial bedrock glacial striation relics in Moshikou, Shijingshan District. It faces the Yongding River and is backed by Cuiwei Mountain. It is the world’s only museum dedicated to glacial relics to date. It officially opened in July 1992.

The Quaternary glacial bedrock glacial striation relics in Moshikou were formed during the cold periods of significant climatic fluctuations in the Quaternary period. At that time, due to a sudden increase in snowfall that far exceeded the rate of snowmelt, snow accumulated and compacted into ice in suitable elevation areas of the mountains. When the ice reached a thickness and weight beyond what the mountain could support, it began to move downhill under its own gravity along the mountain slopes, thus forming glaciers. The bedrock glacial striation is the rock surface that was carved, scraped, and marked by the movement of the glacier.

The Glacier Museum not only disseminates scientific knowledge about the Earth and geology to the general public, but also promotes the patriotic spirit of senior scientists such as Li Siguang, who fearlessly strived to scale the heights of science. Additionally, it provides a field research and academic exchange venue for geological experts and scholars.

Location: No. 28, Moshikou, Shijingshan District, Beijing

The exhibitions in the museum introduce basic knowledge about the Quaternary glaciers, the establishment and development of Mr. Li Siguang’s Quaternary glacial theory, the research and application of glacial systems, their role in national economic construction, as well as the distribution and investigation of Quaternary glaciers in China. The majority of exhibits are photographic materials of glacial relics and some moraine rock specimens. Within the realm of public science education, the museum fully leverages its strengths. Thematic displays such as “The Impact of Climate and Environment on Human Survival and Development,” “How Humanity Might Develop Civilization in Future Ice Ages,” and “The Role of Glacial Phenomena Today in Providing Energy Storage for Humans and Their Potential Significant Threats to Civilization” allow us to gain a deeper understanding of Quaternary glaciology.
