Over a hundred million years ago, basaltic lava flows from the fissure-type volcanic eruptions of the Chao’er River were continuously eroded by the river, forming the steep cliffs seen today. The cliffs stand about 70 meters high and stretch approximately 300 meters in length. The lava flows contain numerous vertical columnar joints, bundled columnar joints, and horizontal columnar joints. Together with the yellow soil that weathered from the top of the lava flows into soil, and the clusters of green shrubs and moss growing in the cracks of the rocks, they vividly form a naturally occurring, colorful rock painting.
