Volcanic Bear Rock

Located 20 kilometers from Chaihe · Moon Town, Volcanic Bear Rock was formed during the volcanic eruptions of the Pliocene epoch in the Tertiary period, 5 to 1.6 million years ago. Ejected surface materials such as basaltic volcanic cinders and bombs, along with other pyroclastic debris, were fused at high temperatures by lava flows to form rock, which then naturally piled up into massive, thick brownish-red layers. The rock pile is located in the mid-mountain forest at an altitude of 900 meters, generally rectangular in shape, over 10 meters high and more than 20 meters wide. It has been eroded over time, forming some cavities. There are two oval openings in the middle and lower parts—one about 3 meters high and 4 meters deep—with pores on top resembling springs. The entrance and exit of the openings are smooth and rounded, resembling the shapes made by black bears entering and exiting.
