On February 9, 1964 (the 26th day of the 12th lunar month), sisters Longmei and Yurong went out to herd the collective sheep on behalf of their father. Caught in a sudden blizzard, they followed the flock and struggled against the storm for a whole day and night until they were exhausted and collapsed in the snow. On the morning of the 10th, the frozen and unconscious Longmei and Yurong were discovered by local herders and promptly taken to the mining area hospital for emergency treatment. The Chairman of the Autonomous Region People's Government personally inscribed words of high praise for their selfless fighting spirit, calling on all youths in the region to learn from the "Grassland Heroine Sisters." Their heroic deeds spread across the country through the news media. The arts community also adapted their story for film and stage. For nearly half a century, the names of the Grassland Heroine Sisters have been widely celebrated across the nation, and their glorious stories have gained fame both at home and abroad. As role models of collectivism, they have inspired generations of youths in their studies and work, shaping the values of children and becoming a shining example of patriotism and collectivist education.
