Mundula Port is situated in Mundula Town, a border township (sumu) of the Darhan Muminggan Joint Banner (abbreviated as Damiao Banner) in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It lies 124 kilometers due north of Damiao Banner and at Border Marker 757 on the China-Mongolia border. It is a Category II seasonal road port approved for opening by the autonomous region government in 1992. In October 2001, the foreign ministries of China and Mongolia officially issued approval documents, marking substantial progress toward the opening of Mundula Port. The port is 290 kilometers from Baotou City (Bailingmiao, the seat of Damiao Banner, is 170 kilometers from Baotou Airport), 288 kilometers from Hohhot City, and approximately 500 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar. The port itself is 20 kilometers from Mundula Town and 213 kilometers from Zhubayin Railway Station. Traveling from Hohhot or Baotou City to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, via this port reduces the journey by one-third compared to the current route through Erenhot Port. The corresponding Mongolian port is Hangi Port in Haddanbulag Sum, East Gobi Province, located 60 kilometers from Haddanbulag County. The road connecting the port is Provincial Highway 211.

To support the operation of Mundula Port, since 2002, Baotou City has adhered to the principles of high standards, high starting points, unified planning, and phased implementation in the construction of the port. Damiao Banner has organized Mundula Sumu as a town-level administrative division, dividing it into zones such as the administrative office area, living service area, residential area, storage area, industrial and sideline area, commercial trade area, public activity center, park, and shelterbelt. These areas have been uniformly planned and designed, with the goal of making Mundula Port a first-class port in central and western Inner Mongolia that enjoys economic prosperity, a sound ecological environment, complete urban functions, stable social order, and integrates border trade with port tourism. The management authorities of Mundula Port include the Banner Port Management Bureau, Customs, Border Inspection Armed Police Force, and Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

The port covers an area of 113,467 square meters, with a built-up area of 3,324 square meters. Currently, the port’s infrastructure, including water, electricity, roads, and communications, is largely complete. Over 140 kilometers of optical cable communication lines have been installed, along with one base station each for China Mobile and China Unicom. A 20.8-kilometer port access asphalt road connects Mundula Port directly to Mundula Town. Construction has begun on a second-class asphalt road from Bailingmiao Town (the seat of Damiao Banner) to Mundula Port (a 140.3-kilometer third-class highway in plain and low hilly terrain), which was completed in 2008. This road is the only route from downtown Baotou to Mundula Port. The port trade zone and port hotel have also been built. In August 2003, Mundula Port became the first port within the Hohhot Customs area to achieve electronic customs declaration, inspection, and livestock product and grease testing services. In 2005, online tax and fee payment was also implemented.
