Ejina is located in the westernmost part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The name "Ejina" comes from Mongolian and translates to "Black River" or "Black Water" in Chinese. This area was once dominated by stands of Populus euphratica trees—layer upon layer stretching as far as the eye can see, their roots interconnected and branches entwined, clustering around the Ruo Shui River. In the desert, if you see rows of fresh or dried Populus euphratica trees, you can tell that water once flowed here. In Ejina, when you touch the wind- and sand-worn trunks of these trees, scarred and weathered, you can feel their tenacious vitality.

Autumn Charm: Ejina is home to the largest, thickest, and oldest ancient Populus euphratica tree in China, revered by local herders as the "Sacred Tree." Standing 23 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 8.1 meters, its gnarled bark is embedded with coins and folded bills, while its branches are adorned with blue and white cloth strips of varying lengths—obviously tied there by locals praying for safety. At the base of the tree is a hollow, said to be the Sacred Tree’s ear; it’s believed that any wish spoken toward it will surely come true.

The best spots to view Populus euphratica are Erdaoqiao and Qidaoqiao on the outskirts of Ejina. Erdaoqiao retains an untamed charm, with wide waterways flanked by Mongolian yurts, ovoos, and rolling sand dunes. The duel scene between Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi in the movie "Hero" was filmed in the Populus euphratica forest at Erdaoqiao in Ejina.

The most breathtaking sight of Populus euphratica in Ejina is the eerie "Forest of Dead Trees," where countless trees have fallen. Some say that Populus euphratica is beautiful in every season—even in death, it leaves a powerful impression. Here, the dead trees lie twisted in all directions, each with its own posture. The combination of desert, blue sky, dead trees, and setting sun creates scenes that make you feel as if you’ve stepped into a surreal, fantastical maze.

Transportation: Fly from Guangzhou to Yinchuan, then take a long-distance bus to Bayanhot in Ejin Banner, Alxa Left Banner, Inner Mongolia. From Bayanhot, there are daily buses to Ejina in the early morning.

Accommodation: In Ejina, you can choose from guesthouses, outdoor camping, or staying in a Mongolian yurt. The yurt hosts are very hospitable, often offering you a hada (traditional scarf) and singing toast songs.

Food: The liveliest area in Ejina is Juyan Road, lined with restaurants. The local cuisine mainly features beef, mutton, and camel meat.
