The Shenzhen Grand Theatre is one of the “Eight Major Cultural Facilities” constructed with government investment in the early days of the Special Economic Zone. It is an important hub for the city’s spiritual civilization and a symbol of modern urban culture. It has witnessed the great practice of Shenzhen’s reform and opening up, showcasing the vibrant charm of Shenzhen as a cultural oasis. It holds milestone historical significance in the development of Shenzhen’s urban culture, has played a vital role in enriching the cultural stage of the Special Economic Zone and promoting cultural exchanges between China and abroad, and is proudly referred to by citizens as the “temple of high art.”

Since its inauguration in May 1989, the Shenzhen Grand Theatre has consistently upheld the mission of promoting outstanding traditional culture

and supporting and advocating high art. It has strived to explore new models and methods for managing cultural facilities with Shenzhen’s unique characteristics. By creating broader opportunities for the development of high art, it has significantly contributed to enhancing the modern

cultural awareness of Shenzhen residents. Notably, the “Shenzhen Grand Theatre Art Festival,” established in 1992 with the theme of “Gathering the Essence of International Art, Showcasing the Brilliance of the Special Zone Stage,” was recorded in the annals of Shenzhen’s cultural history for its “unique concept, meticulous organization, wide-reaching influence, and abundant achievements.” It pioneered the practice of naming national art festivals after theaters. To date, it has been successfully held for 13 editions, becoming an eagerly anticipated annual stage performance event for citizens and leaving an indelible mark on Shenzhen’s journey toward becoming a modern international metropolis.

　In 2003, the Shenzhen Grand Theatre Art Festival was listed among the few representative, exemplary, and protected art festivals retained in Guangdong Province’s Outline for Building a Province Strong in Culture.

As a public cultural facility, the Shenzhen Grand Theatre has now become an important window and bridge for cultural exchange in Shenzhen. To date, it has hosted numerous large-scale performances, including the “Song of Pioneers” gala celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the farewell cultural evening for the People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, and the “Story of Spring” gala commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

The theatre has also welcomed renowned performing arts groups such as the former Soviet Red Army Song and Dance Ensemble and the Houston Ballet from the United States. It has attracted world-class artists including Galina Ulanova, John Denver, Nina, and Li Guyi to perform in Shenzhen. On November 25, 1990, General Secretary [name redacted] personally attended the “Song of Pioneers” cultural evening at the theatre and met with all the performers. By the end of 2009, the theatre had hosted over 1,000 performing groups, staged 1,650 performances, and attracted audiences totaling millions, achieving significant social impact. Public welfare performances such as the “Grand Theatre New Year Art Care Performances” and “Theatre Gatherings on Saturdays” have also flourished. During the Lunar New Year and weekends, the theatre offers free public performances for citizens, earning widespread acclaim.

In 2004, with strong support from the municipal government and relevant departments, a RMB 130 million renovation project was launched to upgrade the theatre’s aging facilities after 15 years of operation. The renovated Shenzhen Grand Theatre emerged with a completely renewed look, ready to welcome the public once again.

In 2009, the government allocated another RMB 18 million to upgrade the theatre’s stage facilities.

The Shenzhen Grand Theatre is fully equipped and elegantly designed. It features a grand theatre (1,199 seats), a concert hall (612 seats), as well as spacious lobbies, hotel facilities, and other functional spaces.

Once upon a time, the Shenzhen Grand Theatre accompanied the forward march of the Special Economic Zone, singing the “Story of Spring.” Special thanks go to the correct leadership of the Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, as well as the strong support from the propaganda and cultural departments. The glorious past has passed, but today’s Shenzhen Grand Theatre will continue to host major government celebratory events, actively provide citizens with more refined artistic works, meet the public’s demand for high art to the greatest extent possible, realize citizens’ cultural rights, and with a brand-new posture, make greater contributions to Shenzhen’s “culture-led city” strategy and its goal of becoming a modern cultural metropolis.
