Splendid China

Splendid China is the first large-scale cultural tourist area in China to bring together folk arts, customs, and residential architecture of various ethnic groups. It was jointly invested in and built by the Hong Kong China Travel Service and the Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town Economic Development Corporation, and is located on the picturesque shores of Shenzhen Bay, adjacent to the famous Splendid China miniature scenic area.

This 180,000-square-meter Folk Culture Village follows the guiding principles of "originating from life, transcending life, showcasing the essence, and making selective presentations" in its construction. It aims to reflect the diverse folk cultures of China’s many ethnic groups from different perspectives. The scenic area features 24 distinctive villages, courtyards, and market streets of 21 ethnic groups across China, all built at a 1:1 scale of their original sites. Among them, villagers in 16 villages perform vibrant ethnic songs and dances rich in local flavor for guests within their own villages.

Performances at all 80 scenic spots are presented by local ethnic actors. The village hosts large-scale traditional folk festivals such as the Torch Festival and Water-Splashing Festival once a month. In this grand collection of residential architecture, the boat-shaped houses of the Li people and the stilted grass houses of the Wa people complement each other, recreating ancient human architectural culture. The exquisitely carved "three rooms with one screen wall" of the Bai people and the "courtyard houses" of the Han people showcase the high-level craftsmanship of traditional Chinese residential architecture. Accompanying these residences are vast expanses of Hainan coconut groves, towering ancient banyan trees from Xishuangbanna, peacocks displaying their plumage, and strolling elephants. Visitors can explore the "village" by vehicle, on foot, or by boat.

In the villages, aside from learning about the architectural styles of various ethnic groups, visitors can also enjoy and participate in ethnic song and dance performances, traditional handicraft workshops, and sample ethnic cuisine. They can also watch high-caliber artistic performances, ethnic art galas, folklore exhibitions, and popular folk programs, allowing them to experience the rich and colorful cultures and arts of China’s 56 ethnic groups. The Folk Culture Village has over ten craft workshops and offers more than twenty types of folk handicrafts and snack-making demonstrations, such as Uyghur hand embroidery, Miao batik, and Dai bamboo-tube rice. When night falls, a magnificent ethnic song and dance gala begins, featuring lively drum bands, dynamic dragon lantern teams, humorous folk performances, and elegant ethnic fashion parades slowly making their way through the village. The ethnic music fountain sprays multicolored water jets in sync with the music, while beams of light in the night sky immerse visitors in a joyous atmosphere and the beautiful poetic tapestry of Chinese ethnic life.
