Nine hikers from Nanshan (including a 4-year-old child) climbed Bijia Mountain in Baguang Community, Daya Bay, Huizhou, on December 8. They crossed 11 peaks in a row and attempted to take a shortcut down to Kuichong on their way back. However, due to dense forests in the deep mountains, they found no path and had to call for help at night.
A joint rescue team formed by the Dapeng police, the Kuichong Subdistrict Agriculture and Forestry Office, the Huizhou Daya Bay Armed Police Special Service Brigade, the Dapeng Forest Firefighting Squadron, hospitals, and other departments conducted a five-hour search and successfully rescued all nine people.
After receiving the distress call, rescuers continuously contacted the trapped individuals by phone. They learned that three men were stranded at the mountaintop, one of whom, named Li Xiao, was exhausted and unable to move. One man, two women, and a child had descended to the mountainside, while the other two men were trapped near a mountain stream on the hillside. Due to the steep terrain and dense forest, the trapped individuals could not clearly describe their location or identify visible landmarks on the ground, making it extremely difficult for rescuers to pinpoint their position. The joint rescue team decided to sound the sirens of the armed police fire trucks so the trapped individuals could determine the direction by sound. Around 11 p.m., it was preliminarily determined that the trapped individuals were on the southern slope of Bijia Mountain.
Based on the determined location, the joint rescue team split into two groups and ascended along two small mountain streams on the southern slope of Bijia Mountain. About half an hour later, the first rescue group found the two men who had already reached the small stream near the mountainside. Based on their information, the general location of the other trapped individuals was also identified. One member of the first rescue group stayed with the two men, while the others found a man, two women, and a boy about 300 meters away on the mountainside. They then joined up with the second rescue group and headed toward the mountaintop, which was 2,000 meters away. At 1:30 a.m. on the 9th, they finally found the three men trapped at the mountaintop. Among them, Li Xiao had collapsed and was unable to move. Rescue personnel immediately provided on-site medical assistance, then helped him walk down slowly. By around 3 a.m., the joint rescue team had safely brought all nine trapped individuals down the mountain.
It was learned that the nine trapped individuals were colleagues and friends from a technology park on Taoyuan Road, Nanshan District. On the morning of the 8th, they went to climb Bijia Mountain in the Daya Bay area of Huizhou. After climbing 11 peaks in a row at the mountaintop, they did not want to retrace their steps and instead attempted to take a shortcut down to Kuichong. Around 8 p.m., they realized that the direction they had chosen had no actual hiking trails. Coupled with the fact that each person only carried one bottle of mineral water and no food during the climb, they were exhausted, hungry, and cold, and unable to descend on their own, prompting them to call for help.
