Shenzhen Zhongshan Park

Located in Nanshan District in the western part of Shenzhen, covering an area of 490,000 square meters, Zhongshan Park is the only park in Shenzhen named after Dr. Sun Yat-sen and also the city’s oldest park.

Zhongshan Park has a history of over 70 years. Established in 1925, it was initiated by Mr. Hu Yu, then magistrate of Bao’an County and a Hong Kong gentleman, to honor Sun Yat-sen. At that time, the park covered only 130,000 square meters. Along with the progress of reform and opening-up and the development of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Zhongshan Park has been continuously expanded and developed.

After the establishment of Shenzhen City, the municipal government replanned Zhongshan Park. In August 1984, the red line was delineated, and after more than three years of preparation.

In 1998, the new leadership of Nanshan District made the development and renovation of Zhongshan Park — “returning green space to the people” — a major initiative under its “people’s livelihood projects.” The park was replanned, and utilizing its undulating hills and dense woods, 14 scenic areas were created, turning it into a comprehensive public leisure park that combines historical-cultural educational significance with a modern atmosphere and traditional charm.

Shenzhen Zhongshan Park Tips: Shenzhen has a subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 22.4°C, a maximum temperature of 36.6°C, and a minimum temperature of 1.4°C. The average annual rainfall is 1,948.6 mm. The prevailing wind direction is southeasterly, with an average annual sunshine duration of 2,120 hours and annual solar radiation of 5,404.9 MJ/m². Due to mountain barriers, typhoons occurring in summer and autumn rarely directly hit Shenzhen, averaging less than once per year.

Inner Lingding Island faces the Nantou Peninsula of Shenzhen across the sea. It is a small island located among Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Hong Kong, and Macau, with a total area of 550 hectares. It was liberated in 1950. To commemorate the soldiers who bravely sacrificed themselves during the Liberation War, the Liberation of Inner Lingding Island Monument was erected at the school field. The monument was established in August 1950, standing 12 meters tall. Its front is inscribed with “Liberation of Inner Lingding Island Monument,” and the back reads “Eternal Glory to the People’s Heroes,” presenting a majestic and spectacular sight. The Liberation of Inner Lingding Martyrs’ Monument was inscribed personally by General Zeng Sheng.

On April 18, 1950, the 390th Regiment of the 130th Division of the 44th Army of the People’s Liberation Army, during the Battle of the Wanshan Islands in the liberation of the coastal areas of Guangdong, was tasked with capturing Inner Lingding Island in Shenzhen Bay (Lingdingyang). Through the unity of the military and civilians, the mission was triumphantly accomplished. Sixteen seasoned officers and soldiers, veterans who had endured gunfire and battle, unfortunately sacrificed their lives and were laid to rest on the southern shores of Pengcheng. The troops and local government solemnly buried these 16 martyrs along with six grain requisition team members from Xixiang, Bao’an, who had died around the same time, at the Bao’an School Field (now near Nanguan Ancient City and Zhongshan Park).

The Liberation of Inner Lingding Island Monument was designated as a cultural relic protection unit by Shenzhen City in 1984. The surroundings of the monument feature beautiful scenery, ancient trees, lush lawns, and blooming flowers.
