Shenzhen Safari Park

Shenzhen Safari Park is the first municipal project in China to be invested in and developed by an enterprise. Built by the picturesque Shenzhen Xili Zhenhu Lake, it covers an area of 640,000 square meters with a total investment of 250 million RMB. It officially opened on September 28, 1993, becoming China’s first subtropical eco-garden scenic area that combines various gardening and sightseeing features such as a zoo, botanical garden, and science education park. It was honored with the title of "China's Greatest" awarded by the State Council. On the northern shore of the mighty Dapeng Bay, lies China’s first back-to-nature open-style zoo—Shenzhen Safari Park. Covering an area of 1.2 square kilometers, it officially opened in 1993 and is China’s first scenic area featuring a tropical ecological garden environment system that integrates animals, forests, plants, and educational experiences.

Every corner of the park boasts enchanting scenery. To the north, rolling green mountains form a natural screen; to the south, there are over thirty giant animal stone sculptures; to the east, lush lychee orchards thrive; and to the west, the shimmering waters of Xili Lake reflect the surroundings. The air here is fresh, the environment serene, with charming bridges over flowing streams, cascading cliffs and waterfalls, and picturesque lake and mountain views. The park is also home to over 300 species and more than 10,000 wild animals. The predator zone is thrilling and exciting; the waterfowl lake sparkles with sunlight as flocks of birds play and chase; and the herbivore zone allows herds of animals to roam freely.

Shenzhen Safari Park has been recognized by relevant departments of the State Council as “China’s Greatest,” specifically as China’s first free-range zoo. This further solidifies its well-deserved status among domestic and international scenic areas and zoos.

Historical Development

In September 1993, Shenzhen Safari Park was established as a state-owned enterprise.

In December 2007, Shenzhen Safari Park transitioned from a state-owned entity to a joint-stock company, becoming a subsidiary of Shenzhen Tourism Group.

From December 2008 to April 2009, dolphins from Nanning, Guangxi, were introduced to Shenzhen Safari Park.

In July 2009, the Ocean World of Shenzhen Safari Park officially opened. Covering an area of 100,000 square meters, it features an Ocean Theater, Thrill Zone, Interactive Space, Starfish Plaza, Observation Platform, and Ocean Tribe. In February 2010, Shenzhen Safari Park hosted the first Zodiac Culture Festival in Shenzhen—the Year of the Tiger Zodiac Culture Festival. It was a grand celebration integrating tiger exhibitions, performances, culture, science, folklore, shadow puppetry, face-changing acts, art, and interactive tiger-feeding experiences.

On April 1, 2010, Shenzhen Safari Park partnered with Shenzhen Blue Sky Social Behavior Language Center to establish the South China Rehabilitation Base for Autistic Children.

On June 1, 2010, the world’s first 5D cinema opened at Shenzhen Safari Park.

On July 1, 2010, the large-scale animal-themed float parade event “Expedition” was officially launched.

On April 1, 2010, the South China Rehabilitation Base for Autistic Children was established in the Ocean World of Shenzhen Safari Park.

In the early hours of February 6, 2013, giant pandas arrived at Shenzhen Safari Park.
