Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School

Established in 2001 and located in the Xili University Town, Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School is a high-level talent cultivation and scientific innovation base jointly created by Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. Directly affiliated with Tsinghua University, it is the university's only off-campus campus and serves as both an experimental ground for educational reform and a key component of Tsinghua’s mission to become a world-class university.

Currently, there are over 3,000 full-time graduate students enrolled, including more than 360 doctoral students. The school has cumulatively enrolled over 9,000 full-time students, including more than 900 doctoral candidates, and has graduated over 6,000 students who have entered the workforce.

The faculty at Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School is primarily composed of full-time teachers, supplemented by dual-base faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and part-time teachers. There are over 160 full-time teachers, more than 80 postdoctoral fellows, and over 280 dual-base teachers holding associate professorships or higher. Academicians such as Qian Yi, Lu Qiang, Zhu Jing, Chen Zhaoyuan, Chen Liquan, Li Longtu, Fan Weicheng, Hao Jiming, Zheng Jianchao, Kong Xiangfu, and Li Liangcheng all serve as dual-appointed professors or dual-base faculty members at the school.

Sharing the same institution, brand, and cultural heritage, Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School is committed to innovation and entrepreneurship, writing a new chapter in the south. Upholding the educational philosophy of “rooted in Shenzhen, connected to Tsinghua” and the principle of “interdisciplinary integration and innovation-driven entrepreneurship,” the school has developed a distinctive talent cultivation model that is international, innovation-focused, and interdisciplinary. Guided by Tsinghua’s research mission of “reaching for the heights, grounding in reality, and nurturing talent,” the school actively engages in social services, explores cultural heritage and innovation, and strives to contribute to the economic and social development of Shenzhen and surrounding areas through high-level talent cultivation, original scientific research, and the commercialization of high-tech achievements. It also aims to provide Tsinghua with experience in operating off-campus campuses and to support the leapfrog development of higher education in Shenzhen.

Currently, the Shenzhen Graduate School comprises seven academic divisions: Life and Health Sciences, Energy and Environment, Information Science and Technology, Logistics and Transportation, Advanced Manufacturing, Marine Science and Technology, and Social Sciences and Management. Leveraging the comprehensive strengths of Tsinghua’s main campus and focusing on the industrial characteristics and upgrading needs of Shenzhen, the school emphasizes the development of disciplines such as information technology, advanced manufacturing, network and media technologies, environment, materials, new energy, logistics, and marine sciences, aiming to cultivate high-end, innovation-driven entrepreneurial talents. The Tsinghua University Marine Technology Research Center, Tsinghua University Hong Kong and Macau Research Center, and Tsinghua University Hospital Management Research Institute are also based at the Shenzhen Graduate School. In September 2014, based on the Shenzhen Graduate School, Tsinghua University and the University of California, Berkeley signed a cooperation agreement in Shenzhen to jointly establish the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, which was officially inaugurated in October 2015.

Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School has gradually established a number of academic laboratories and research institutions, including four national-level key research institutions and six provincial/ministerial-level key research institutions. Breaking the boundaries of traditional disciplines, the school explores the “innovation team” model, aiming to form a group of distinctive and capable innovation teams. These teams are expected to evolve into provincial/ministerial or even national-level innovation forces in the future, and to establish a number of internationally advanced and domestically first-class high-level laboratories and engineering centers. Currently, the school has one Guangdong Provincial Innovation Team, one Shenzhen Peacock Team, and ten school-level innovation teams.

A wide range of student activities are organized at Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School. Student organizations such as sports teams, the Purple Bauhinia Volunteer Service Group, the Qingfen Student Journalists Group, the Psychology Association, the Career Development Association, the Student Art Troupe, and the Shuimu Drama Society provide platforms for students to showcase their talents and energize their youth.
