Former Residence of Chen Yu

The Former Residence of Chen Yu is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Former Residence of Chen Yu is located in Chenwu Village, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. It was built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. Facing west and situated eastward, the structure is made of brick and wood, featuring one main hall, four rooms, and a veranda. It is 10.5 meters wide, 10 meters deep, and 7.5 meters high, with a construction area of approximately 108 square meters. The front courtyard covers an area of 35 square meters. It has undergone several renovations since the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Chen Yu (1901–1974) took part in the 1922 Hong Kong Seamen’s Strike as a union leader aboard the British ship SS Queen of the East. After the outbreak of the 1925 Canton–Hong Kong Strike, he was responsible for receiving striking workers from Hong Kong in Shenzhen. He joined the Chinese Communist Party the same year. During the 1927 Guangzhou Uprising, he served as the People’s Justice Commissioner of the Guangzhou Soviet Government. After the founding of the People’s Republic, he held positions including Governor of Guangdong Province.

In 1984, the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government designated it as a cultural relics protection unit.

Chen Yu (1901–1974) was born in Chenwu Village, Nantou, Bao’an County (now Shenzhen), Guangdong Province. He came from a poor family of seafaring laborers. His father passed away when he was just three months old, and he left school after two years of study at a village private school at the age of nine. In the early summer of 1912, the first year of the Republic of China, Chen Yu became an apprentice at a sewing machine repair shop in Hong Kong. In 1916, he apprenticed at an automobile company in Hong Kong. After completing his three-year term, the company boss, recognizing his intelligence and capability, sent him to a driving and auto repair school in Guangzhou.
