Chiwan Fort

Chiwan Fort is a cultural heritage site protected by the Shenzhen Municipal Government.

Chiwan Fort is located on the hilltop to the left of Chiwan Port in Shekou, Shenzhen. It was built during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty and remained in use until the end of the dynasty. Chiwan, situated at the forefront of Nantou Peninsula — known as the “Gateway to All of Guangdong” — faces Lingdingyang Bay and served as a forward outpost for Guangdong’s coastal defenses during the Opium Wars. The fort is rectangular in shape, measuring 26.2 meters in length, 15.5 meters in width, and 4.5 meters in height. Its lower part is constructed from granite stones, while the upper section is built with blue bricks. Inside the fort are seven rammed-earth barracks, with the entrance located in the center of the northern wall. According to the "Xin'an County Annals" from the Jiaqing era, the fort had a garrison of 20 soldiers and six iron cannons. In December 1984, a clearance and excavation project was carried out, unearthing artifacts such as ceramics, glassware, medicine bottles, bullets, iron cannonballs, daggers, inkstones, copper coins, and earthenware Chinese chess pieces. Restoration work was also conducted.

In 1983, the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government designated it as a cultural heritage protection site.
