Huang Ancestral Hall in Bao'an

The Huang Ancestral Hall in Bao'an is a cultural relic protection unit of Shenzhen.

The Huang Ancestral Hall is located in Shanghe Village, Xin'an Town, Bao'an District, Shenzhen. Built during the Ming Dynasty and later renovated multiple times, it is a complex of buildings featuring four courtyards, three bays, and three skywells. It is 41.3 meters deep and 10 meters wide, with the central hall inscribed as “Dunmu Hall” and a shrine to Huang Gupo nearby. Between the front courtyard and the central hall stands a stone memorial archway commemorating Huang Shu, the founding ancestor of the Huang clan in Shenzhen during the Jin Dynasty and a filial son of southern Guangdong. The archway is named “Filial Piety Spreads Far,” primarily built with stone, supplemented by wood and tile components. It follows a four-pillar, three-bay, three-story structure, standing 6.5 meters tall and 6 meters wide. The front features the couplet: “Jin Dynasty ethics in southern land, six years by the tomb, a lifetime of devotion,” while the back reads: “Fame opens the lane of Ziyu’s day, filial piety passed on through Sima’s age.” The “Filial Piety Spreads Far” archway is the only remaining Huang Shu memorial archway in Shenzhen. The entire ancestral hall is exquisitely decorated with fine carvings, compact yet elegant, and also solemn and classic, making it one of the renowned ancestral halls in Shenzhen.
