The Temple of Grand Coordinator Wang, commonly known as the Governor’s Temple, is located in the old market area of Xixiang Township, Bao’an District, Shenzhen. It was built during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty. According to the “Treatise on Construction” section of the Jiaqing-era “Xin’an County Annals: Construction Outline” on altars and temples: “The Governor’s Temple honors Wang Laijin, the Grand Coordinator of Guangdong in this dynasty. One is in Xixiang, one in Shatou Market, and one in Shipu Market.” It is a three-bay, three-courtyard ancestral hall-style building. The structure features a through-tenon wooden framework and a flush-gable roof. It covers a construction area of 408 square meters. The building complex includes a main gate, front corridor, central hall, rear hall, and more, making for an impressive sight. The stone plaque above the main gate bears five raised characters reading “Temple of Grand Coordinator Wang,” and the stone couplet on either side reads: “Governed Guangdong, exemplifying lone loyalty; your devoted heart, two memorial petitions, etched in history; Administered the people, leaving behind benevolent governance; the common folk, your eternal subjects, praise your virtue for all time.”

Wang Laijin, of the Han Army of the Plain Yellow Banner, passed the imperial examination as a presented scholar in the eighth year of Tiancong (1634) and served as Grand Coordinator of Guangdong in the fourth year of Kangxi (1665). He submitted a memorial listing six major issues plaguing Guangdong, which drew the attention of the Qing court, leading to the implementation of reforms addressing each issue. In the seventh year of Kangxi, Wang Laijin was dismissed from office and recalled to the capital due to his lenient enforcement of orders to relocate coastal residents who resisted moving. Nevertheless, he risked his life to write the “Memorial on Restoring the Border and Hometown,” which was eventually approved by Emperor Kangxi, allowing the restoration of the border and return of the hometowns. However, Wang Laijin died from overwork. The people of Xin’an County then built the temple to honor him.
