Fengyan Ancient Temple was first built during the late Song and early Yuan dynasties (Dade era), perched halfway up Phoenix Mountain, nestled between the mountain and the sea. With its grand halls, incense-filled air, and the continuous sound of morning bells and evening drums, it has become one of the important Buddhist cultural centers in Shenzhen and the surrounding areas.

The ancient temple was built by Wen Yinglin, the great-grandson of Wen Tianxiang, to honor his ancestor. It is said that when Wen Yinglin arrived here, it was a time of famine. To better assess the disaster situation, he built a "Smoke-Watching Tower" atop Da Mao Mountain. Whenever he spotted a village without smoke rising from its chimneys, he would immediately send aid. One day, while inspecting the affected areas, Wen Yinglin came across Fengyan and was struck by its unique terrain, majestic peaks, and strikingly beautiful rocks. He decided to build a temple there to commemorate his great-grandfather, Wen Tianxiang. That very night, he dreamed that Guanyin (the Goddess of Mercy) instructed him to construct “Fengyan Ancient Temple” on this site. Thus, he raised funds to build the temple to enshrine Guanyin and to honor Wen Tianxiang. Because of this, both local residents and visitors have long flocked here to pray and seek blessings, keeping the incense burning strong. Within the temple are the Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall and the Yinglin Pavilion, dedicated to commemorating the esteemed members of the Wen family.

During the Hongzhi era of the Ming Dynasty, Zheng Shizhong, a descendant of Wen Tianxiang’s loyal soldiers and a successful imperial examination graduate, came to Fengyan Ancient Temple. Grateful for the blessings of Guanyin, Zheng Shizhong carved a large stone tablet inscribed with “The Pure Bottle Pours Sweet Dew” on the right side of the temple as a token of remembrance. This tablet remains intact to this day.

The Ancient Temple Scenic Area within the mountain is the main section of the Phoenix Rock Scenic Zone. Accessible via mountain roads and stone steps, it centers around Fengyan Temple, which was first built between 1297 and 1307, and is complemented by numerous natural landscapes. These include the “Pure Bottle Dew,” “Warbler Rock Nodding,” “Phoenix Immortal Cave,” “Longevity Immortal Well,” “Praying Hands Pillow Stream,” among others. The cliffs are inscribed with poems and calligraphy from literati throughout history, and there is also a newly built comprehensive building and Sea-Viewing Pavilion.

The Phoenix Mountain Stone Carvings are located within Fengyan Ancient Temple at Phoenix Mountain Forest Park, Fengyan Village, Fuyong Subdistrict, Bao’an District, Shenzhen. They represent the only existing cliff stone carving complex in Bao’an District, featuring rich content, exquisite craftsmanship, and distinct regional characteristics.

Phoenix Community: Covering a total area of 9.80 square kilometers, Phoenix Community includes 4.5 square kilometers of developable land and 5.3 square kilometers within the Basic Ecological Control Line, mainly consisting of Phoenix Mountain Forest Park, Wushan Reservoir, and Qilu Reservoir. Within the ecological control zone, there are 2.07 hectares of basic farmland. Phoenix Community is currently the largest community in Fuyong Subdistrict, comprising 18 residential groups. By the end of 2014, the community had a permanent registered population of 2,100, predominantly surnamed Wen—descendants of Wen Tianxiang’s nephew, the Southern Song national hero and patriotic poet.
