Danxia Yuan Water Conservancy Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

Spanning 68.9 square kilometers, the Danxia Yuan Water Conservancy Scenic Area is developed around five cascading hydroelectric stations situated along a 50-kilometer section of the Jinjiang River, stretching from “Little Danxia” to the Yao Mountain Hydropower Station. With the river flanked by mountain ranges on both sides, the area enjoys dense forests and a well-preserved aquatic ecosystem, serving as a natural oxygen bar. Leveraging the water conservancy hub project of the Jinjiang Reservoir’s cascade hydropower stations, the area enhances irrigation capacity for farmlands on both banks and protects downstream towns and riverside communities from flooding. Meanwhile, the development of the cascade hydropower stations has stabilized water levels and flow along the river, widened scenic water surfaces, and enriched the landscape with both natural and engineered beauty, facilitating leisurely boat cruises. This harmonizes the scenic strengths of the famed Danxia Mountain and the Jinjiang River, creating a picturesque river-and-mountain gallery where the two complement each other.

Taking advantage of its designation as a “National Water Conservancy Scenic Area,” the county plans to develop a series of Jinjiang River water-based tourism projects, striving to establish the Danxia Yuan Water Conservancy Scenic Area as a national-level water conservancy destination and a model for comprehensive water resource development in the province, as well as a new tourism highlight for Renhua.

The Jinjiang River, the main waterway flowing through Renhua County, originates in Chongyi County, Jiangxi Province, runs through Renhua, and joins the Zhen River, which then flows into the Beijiang River. It is the cradle of Renhua’s culture, and the city’s economic, cultural, and social development owe much to the nourishment of the Jinjiang. Flowing eastward, the river passes by the Danxia Mountain, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Its majestic presence, resembling a rainbow, adds vitality and grandeur to the scenery of Danxia Mountain, making the Danxia Yuan Water Conservancy Scenic Area one of the county’s most renowned attractions.

The Danxia Yuan Water Conservancy Scenic Area boasts breathtaking riverside landscapes, where red cliffs, lush greenery, and the azure sky blend seamlessly into nature’s palette. The Song Dynasty poet Su Zhe once wrote: “A rainbow’s waist bends three hundred feet, / A whale’s back bears fifteen boats in row.” Gazing upon the splendid river and mountain scenery from the upper reaches of the Jinjiang offers a truly magnificent view.
