Former Residence of Huang Juren

The Former Residence of Huang Juren is a classic red tourism site and a patriotic education base.

Huang Juren (1904–1928), born in Yangbei Village, Tieshangang, Longchuan County, Guangdong Province, was one of the outstanding leaders of the early youth movement in Guangdong. During the Great Revolution period, he, along with Ruan Xiaoxian and Liu Erpeng, was honored as one of the “Three Heroes of Dongjiang.”

In 1920, Huang Juren studied at Longchuan County Middle School (now Longchuan No. 1 Middle School). In 1922, he was admitted to Guangdong Provincial No. 1 First-Class Industrial Specialized School. He joined the Chinese Socialist Youth League in 1923, and became a member of the Chinese Communist Party in March 1925, serving as the Secretary of the Guangzhou Local Committee of the Communist Youth League and head of its Organization Department. In 1926, he successively held the positions of head of the Organization Department and acting secretary of the Guangdong Regional Committee of the Communist Youth League, secretary of the Youth Movement Committee of the CCP Guangdong Regional Committee, and special commissioner of the Peasant Department of the CCP Central Committee. In 1927, he served as the secretary of the Guangdong Regional Committee of the Communist Youth League and was appointed in August of the same year as the secretary of the Shantou Municipal Committee of the CCP. During this time, he coordinated the entry of the Nanchang Uprising troops led by Zhou Enlai into Shantou and participated in the establishment of the “Seven-Day Red Regime in Chaozhou-Shantou.” Later, he took on roles such as special commissioner and inspector of the CCP Guangdong Provincial Committee. In the winter of the same year, he participated in the Guangzhou Uprising. In 1928, he served as secretary of the Huiyang County Committee of the CCP and as an inspector of the CCP Guangdong Provincial Committee. In the autumn of the same year, while working to reconnect and revive party and league organizations in the Guangzhou area, he and his wife Zhang Xueying (deputy secretary-general of the Guangzhou Local Committee of the Communist Youth League) were arrested by enemy agents. The couple were executed together in Guangzhou. Huang Juren was 25 years old at the time.

The Former Residence of Huang Juren is located at Ding, Qiaotou Lingxia, Tieshang Town, Longchuan County. Built during the Qing Dynasty, it faces southeast and is situated northwest. Originally a three-courtyard, two-wing structure, the main house had an upper and lower five-room layout, characteristic of a Hakka square house. It covers a total width of 32.8 meters and a depth of 29.5 meters, with a construction area of 967.6 square meters. The residence features a civil-structured design with mixed walls of lime-sand rammed earth and earthen bricks, a flush gable roof, gray tile covering, and an earthen floor. The front eaves of the main gate are supported by two round bluestone pillars bearing a two-step beam. The gate itself has a bluestone frame and threshold, wooden door panels, and a latticed door. In 2011, the county government allocated special funds to renovate the residence according to its original appearance.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Huang Juren was posthumously recognized as a martyr. A “Huang Juren Memorial Room” was established in the county museum, and the Qiaotou Primary School where he studied in his youth was renamed “Huang Juren School” in his honor. Exhibitions on Huang Juren’s life and deeds are displayed at the Guangdong Provincial Museum of Revolutionary History, the Heyuan Municipal Museum of Revolutionary History, and the Longchuan County Museum (Huang Juren Memorial Room). In 1988, the Guangdong People’s Publishing House released the book Research Materials on Huang Juren. In 2011, it was designated as the fourth batch of patriotic education bases in Heyuan City.

Huang Juren (1904–1928), from Qiaotou, Shikeng, Longchuan County, lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother. As a child, he received only a few years of schooling. Due to his family’s poverty, he farmed and herded cattle from the age of ten before becoming an apprentice at a cloth factory in Foshan. In the 11th year of the Republic of China (1922), he was admitted to the Dyeing and Weaving program at Guangdong Provincial No. 1 First-Class Industrial School. By then, Marxism-Leninism had spread widely in Guangzhou, and he was influenced by revolutionary ideas. In the summer of 1923, he joined the “New Students’ Society.” That winter, he also became a member of the Chinese Socialist Youth League, actively engaging in activities with Zhou Wenyong and others...
