Longchuan lies at the upper reaches of the Dong and Han Rivers and has a long history of revolutionary struggle. As early as during the Great Revolution period, inspired by the May Fourth Movement, the people of Longchuan sought revolutionary truth—some went overseas to work and study, while others joined the "Propagandists Training Institute" in Guangzhou to learn and spread Marxist revolutionary ideas. In 1925, communists such as Huang Juequn, who came to Longchuan with the Second Eastern Expedition, established party organizations in their hometowns, forming revolutionary mass organizations such as the County Peasants’ Association, General Labor Union, and Communist Youth League, actively promoting workers’ and peasants’ movements. During the Agrarian Revolutionary War period, following instructions from higher-level party organizations, the Longchuan Party organization established a Soviet government and carried out a series of armed struggles by workers and peasants, leading soldiers and civilians in the Soviet area in a grueling fight against the Kuomintang authorities. During the War of Resistance against Japan, the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party sent Mai Wen to Longchuan to rebuild the party organization. Under the leadership of the re-established CCP organization, they used legal platforms to found the Longchuan Daily, organized the "Youth Self-Education Training Class," and established mass organizations such as the Longchuan Youth Anti-Japanese Vanguard, forming a broad anti-Japanese national united front across the county and vigorously advancing the anti-Japanese salvation movement. During the Liberation War period, under the leadership of the CCP organization, the soldiers and civilians of Longchuan rose up in resistance, engaging in a life-and-death struggle against the Kuomintang authorities and the County Police Self-Defense Corps in Longchuan. Since the establishment of the Longchuan CCP organization in November 1925, the people of Longchuan, under the leadership of the Communist Party, valiantly fought to overthrow the “three big mountains,” sacrificing their lives and shedding blood. By the liberation of Longchuan in May 1949 and the establishment of a people's democratic government, over 480 outstanding heroes had sacrificed their lives on this land. During the period of socialist revolution and construction, more than 170 other outstanding individuals from Longchuan also gave their precious lives for the independence and liberation of the nation and for the protection of people’s lives and property. Additionally, some exemplary individuals from other counties shed their blood on this ancient land in service of the socialist cause and the happiness of the people.

In 1958, the Longchuan County Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the County People’s Government laid the foundation to build the Longchuan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery in honor of these outstanding heroes. In January 1962, it was designated as a key cultural relics protection unit by the Longchuan County Government. In November 1995, it was recognized as a patriotic education base by the Heyuan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government.

Laolong Town: Located in the southern part of Longchuan County, Laolong Town sits along the upper reaches of the Dong River and serves as the political, economic, cultural, and transportation hub of the county. The town covers a total area of 15.4 square kilometers, with higher terrain in the northeast and lower in the southwest, surrounded by mountains on three sides and bordering the Dong River to the west.

Laolong has been a commercial hub since ancient times. Since June 1, 1949, it has been the seat of the county government. Legend has it that the top of Laolong Fort was a strategic stronghold defended by Zhao Tuo during the Qin Dynasty to secure Longchuan. Originally called Laolong, it was renamed Laolong in the 27th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1688). After the liberation, it was established as Laolong District; in 1958, it became Laolong Commune; in 1983, it was restructured as Laolong Town. Currently...
