Former Site of the Longchuan Tieshang Branch of the Guangdong New Students’ Society

The former site of the Longchuan Tieshang Branch of the Guangdong New Students’ Society is located at Tieshang Primary School in Tieshang Town, Longchuan County.

On June 17, 1923, a peripheral organization of the Socialist Youth League—the Guangdong New Students’ Society—was established in Guangzhou. At that time, Huang Jurén, a young man from Longchuan who was studying at the Guangdong Provincial First Specialized Industrial School, joined the Guangdong New Students’ Society through the introduction of fellow Dongjiang progressive students such as Ruan Xiaoxian and Liu Erzong, and became one of its key members. During the summer vacation of that year, taking advantage of his trip back to his hometown, Huang carried revolutionary publications and actively promoted the anti-imperialist and patriotic ideals of the New Students’ Society. He spoke about the anti-imperialist struggles of Guangzhou youth students, organized local intellectuals such as Luo Yuping and Huang Qipeng from Tieshang Town to study revolutionary theory, and introduced them to Marxism. After a period of advocacy and mobilization, Huang Jurén established the Longchuan Tieshang Branch of the Guangdong New Students’ Society at Tieshang Central Primary School. The establishment of the branch played a significant pioneering and promotional role in spreading Marxism and awakening the youth of Longchuan.
