On May 14, 1949, the Laolong Campaign began. To effectively block the Nationalist Guangdong Security Fourth Division’s Fifth Regiment stationed in Dongshui, Heping, from coming to the aid of Laolong, the overall command of the Laolong Campaign instructed Zheng Qun to lead the main forces of the Second Detachment of the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong–Jiangxi–Hunan Column to lie in ambush on the banks of the upper Dongjiang River, several kilometers from Laolong, to intercept the reinforcement troops. The commander of the Second Detachment, Zheng Qun, deployed the Yunnan Company of the Third Regiment and the search company of the defected Guangdong Security Thirteenth Regiment at the high ground of Wushiba to set up an ambush, while other companies of the Third Regiment and the Feipeng Unit took positions on the right side. As our army had predicted before the battle, after the enemy Security Fourth Division headquarters in Laolong was surrounded by our forces, Deputy Commander Peng Jianlong requested reinforcements from the troops stationed in Heping. Around 3:00 PM, Deputy Commander and Commander of the Fifth Regiment Lie Yingjia led two battalions of approximately 1,000 troops stationed in Heping, traveling downriver toward Laolong. When the reinforcement boats arrived at Wushiba, they were suddenly met with fierce artillery fire from our forces. The enemy immediately fell into disarray and retreated in defeat. Officers even pressed their guns against the heads of soldiers to force them into successive charges, but they were met with intense artillery fire from our blocking forces. After the frontal assault, four companies that had been lying in ambush on the right side launched a flanking attack from behind the enemy, catching them in a crossfire and inflicting heavy casualties. Many soldiers jumped into the Dongjiang River in panic, leading to a complete rout. The fierce battle continued until evening, and both battalions of the enemy were completely defeated. In this battle, the enemy political training office director Ou Jinsheng and over 100 officers and soldiers were killed, Deputy Commander Gong Yaohui was wounded, and more than 240 enemies were captured. The spoils included two Type 82 mortars, two Type 60 mortars, thirteen light and heavy machine guns, 250 rifles, eleven grenade launchers, one radio set, and three warhorses. Deputy Commander Lie Yingjia jumped into a reed hut in the Dongjiang River and escaped under the cover of darkness to Sidu Town, then returned to Dongshui to regroup the remaining forces. The Huihuo'an at Wushiba served as the command post for the battle that day.
