The Former Site of the Longchuan Guerrilla Armed Activities (Nanyue Hermitage) is a classic red tourism attraction and a patriotic education base.

Nanyue Hermitage — the Former Site of the Longchuan Guerrilla Armed Activities is located at Nanyue Hermitage in Maoshe Village, Tiechang Town, Longchuan County.

In the summer of 1939, a Party branch was established in Maoshe Village, with Zeng Kaiming as the secretary, and Zeng Guanyue and Zeng Yifu serving as the organization and propaganda committee members respectively. They used Maqian Primary School as a base for Party activities, and operated under the publicly legitimate identity of “primary school teachers,” engaging in underground Party work. During the War of Resistance against Japan, the Party branch organized an Anti-Japanese Vanguard, published the “Maofeng” journal, put up wall posters, staged plays, and sang revolutionary songs to actively promote the anti-Japanese cause. From 1941 to the spring of 1942, three Party member training classes were held in Nanyue Hermitage in Maoshe Village and at Zeng Kaiming’s home, where participants studied Mao Zedong’s works such as “The Current Situation and Our Tasks,” “On Protracted War,” and “The Party’s United Front Policy,” as well as the “Constitution of the Communist Party of China” and the “Munich Agreement.”

In August 1947, Zhang Qichu from the Hedong Sub-Working Committee arrived in Maoshe Village following orders from his superiors to integrate the “Maintenance Society.” Under Zhang Qichu’s leadership, over 50 members of the “Longhe River People’s Armed Maintenance Society,” who falsely claimed to be led by the Communists, were reorganized into the “Dongjiang People’s Anti-Conscription Team – New Birth Squad.” Zhang served as the special commissioner, Wu Haitang as the deputy squad leader, and Wei Qiuhuan and Wei Renda as the chief and deputy political instructors respectively. By the end of the year, the New Birth Squad had grown to over 200 members. Using the old bases in Maoshe and Sijia as strongholds, the squad expanded into surrounding areas and set up a small underground armory at the outer quarters of Zeng Yan’s home in Maoshe to repair machinery and manufacture guns and revolvers. In the spring of 1948, the Kuomintang reactionaries organized the county self-defense corps and anti-bandit squads to brutally suppress the Maoshe guerrilla zone. The New Birth Squad fought back bravely, relying on favorable terrain and close coordination with local militiamen, and repeatedly defeated the Kuomintang’s encirclement campaigns. On March 13, 1948, Zeng Juzhi, Major General and Commander of the Sixth Pacification Zone of Guangdong Province and Commissioner of Xingmei, assembled a force of over 800 troops to surround the Maoshe guerrilla zone. The New Birth Squad fought fiercely in a day-long battle but, ultimately facing a stronger enemy, was forced to retreat and withdraw from the Maoshe guerrilla zone. Nanyue Hermitage was one of the main sites for combat and command operations during that time.

In June 2011, it was designated as a patriotic education base by the Heyuan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government.
