The Site of Gu Bai’s Sacrifice is located at the Tuzhi Factory in Shangping Town, Longchuan County.

After the Red Army of the Central Soviet Area began the Long March, the Party Central Committee instructed the border area of Fujian, Guangdong, and Jiangxi to continue conducting guerrilla armed struggle. In late February 1935, Gu Bai, former Secretary-General of the Central Bureau of the Soviet Area who had remained behind to persist in the fight, came to Shangping in Longchuan as the commander of the guerrilla forces in the Guangdong-Jiangxi border area. He arrived at the Tuzhi Factory in Yuanyang Pit, Qinghua, Shangping, where he gathered over 20 cadres from the Soviet Area along the Longchuan-Xingning border to convey directives from higher authorities (some say it was to convey the spirit of the Zunyi Conference), and attempted to establish contact with Gu Dacun from the Dongjiang region to carry out guerrilla armed struggle. During the meeting, an underground messenger from Qinghua betrayed them, tipping off Wang Jingqing, the local township head and commander of the self-defense militia. Wang then colluded with over 100 officers of the Nationalist county police stationed in Shangping and surrounded Yuanyang Pit on March 6. Gu Bai led around 20 men in a hasty counterattack and attempted breakout. During the battle, to cover others’ escape, Gu Bai and two other leaders were shot and killed, while the remaining fighters managed to break through the encirclement.

Shangping Town: Located in the northern part of Longchuan County, Shangping Town borders Dingnan County and Xunwu County of Jiangxi Province, as well as Xingning City of the same province. The town covers a total area of 206 square kilometers, governs 13 village committees and one neighborhood committee, with 218 economic cooperatives and a total population of 28,000. The mountainous area of the town spans 270,000 mu, and the arable land area amounts to 20,000 mu (including 16,829 mu of paddy fields and 3,261 mu of upland fields). Transportation in Shangping Town is convenient and highly accessible, with the exception of the Longjiang Highway passing through the area.
