Yuewang Well of Tuocheng

The Yuewang Well of Tuocheng is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The Yuewang Well is located within Guangxiao Temple on Zhongshan Street in Tuocheng Town. It was the well used in the residence of Zhao Tuo, who served as the Qin dynasty magistrate. Later, when Zhao Tuo became the King of Nanyue, the well came to be known as the "Yuewang Well," also called the "Wanshou Palace Well." Having withstood over 2000 years of dynastic rise and fall.

It was renovated in the fifth year of the Qianfu era during the Tang dynasty (878 AD), and a local scholar named Changming wrote a record of the well, which was engraved on stone. Since then, the well has undergone multiple renovations across different dynasties, each time accompanied by written records. The well is built from brick and stone, with a depth of 40 meters. The well opening is a circular aperture with a diameter of 0.6 meters, situated 0.7 meters above ground level. The hexagonal platform is made of four flat stone slabs, while the shaft is constructed with three layers of red square stones, beneath which blue bricks are laid all the way to the bottom. The middle section has a diameter of approximately 2.5 meters. With its sturdy and elegant structure, it is one of the renowned ancient brick wells of Lingnan.

After the mid-Qing dynasty, the shaft of the well became silted up but remained well-preserved. Beside the well stands a stone stele inscribed with the "Record of Yue Well" by Wei Changming of the Tang dynasty, which remains in relatively good condition and is considered one of the ancient wells of Lingnan. In May 1962, the Longchuan County People's Government officially listed it as one of the first batch of county-level cultural relic protection units.
