Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall at Luofu Mountain
The Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall at Luofu Mountain is a classic red tourism destination, as well as a base for patriotic education and national defense education.
The Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall in Boluo County, Huizhou City, is located within the Zhu Ming Cave Scenic Area of Luofu Mountain, a national key scenic spot. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the picturesque Bailian Lake in front, the memorial is not far from the former headquarters of the Dongjiang Column—the Chongxu Ancient Temple—on the right. The surroundings are elegant and the scenery pleasant. The name “Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall” was inscribed by Ye Xuanping, former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
The memorial covers a construction area of 3,300 square meters and includes four exhibition halls and a service work area. The four exhibition halls are the “Prelude Hall,” “Exhibition Hall,” “Martyrs’ Hall,” and “Screening Hall.” The service area consists of two corridors for visiting and resting, each over 60 meters long and 3 meters wide. At the front of the Prelude Hall (223 m²) is a large color-sprayed mural that, with the Dongjiang River as the backdrop, grandly showcases the spirit of the Dongjiang Column. On the walls on both sides of the Prelude Hall are inscribed two songs—“March of the Volunteers” and “Song of the Dongjiang Column”—which express the strong will of the entire nation during the War of Resistance. On the inner side walls of the Prelude Hall, the inscriptions of six central leaders are displayed in red with gold lettering, all giving high praise to the Dongjiang Column. The ceiling of the Prelude Hall is adorned with 60 star-shaped lights, symbolizing the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Dongjiang Column.
The Exhibition Hall (525 m²) uses a wealth of documentary materials, authentic historical photographs, and precious revolutionary relics to comprehensively reflect the revolutionary deeds of the Dongjiang Column, the Guangdong-Guangxi Column, and the Guangdong-Jiangxi-Hunan Border Column. The exhibits are divided into five sections: the first section “Formation of the Dongjiang People’s Anti-Japanese Armed Forces at the Outbreak of the War of Resistance,” the second section “Persistence in Guerrilla Warfare Behind Enemy Lines and the Establishment of the Huidong-Bao’an Anti-Japanese Base,” the third section “Formation of the Dongjiang Column and Victory in the War of Resistance,” the fourth section “Relocation North to Shandong and Battles Across the Country,” and the fifth section “Persistence in Guerrilla Warfare in the South and Joint Liberation of Guangdong.” There are about 82 cultural relics on display, mainly daily items used by Dongjiang soldiers and weapons captured from the enemy. Important relics include the printing press of the Dongjiang Column’s newspaper Forward and proclamations issued by the Dongjiang Column and the Guangdong-Jiangxi-Hunan Border Column. On the other side of the hall, there are six oil paintings created by renowned artists, depicting major revolutionary events of the Dongjiang Column.
The Martyrs’ Hall (120 m²) is dedicated to commemorating the great achievements of the martyrs and promoting their patriotic spirit, ensuring that it is further carried forward. The names of over 5,000 martyrs are engraved in the hall. It also displays the glorious deeds of 10 heroic individuals and 5 heroic groups.
The Screening Hall (76 m²) primarily shows the 15-episode TV series “Dongjiang Column,” the historical documentary “The Lugou Bridge Incident,” and the documentary film “Dongjiang Column.” This allows visitors to more vividly understand the combat history of the Dongjiang Column and the July 7th Incident.
In the visiting corridors, an exhibition titled “Evidence of Japanese Atrocities in China” is also set up. The content includes the Japanese military’s crimes of “invasion,” “looting,” “burning,” “bombing,” “creating no-man’s lands,” “persecuting women and children,” “setting up comfort stations,” “enslaving laborers,” “conducting bacteriological warfare,” and “using poison gas warfare.” Through the exhibition, visitors are reminded not to forget national humiliation, to strive for strength, and to revitalize China.
In front of the memorial is a spacious square (2,284 m²), and on the right side of the square is a group of figure sculptures with the theme: Dongjiang Column soldiers forging ahead one after another, moving forward forever.
The Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall began construction in September 2002 and officially opened to the public on December 2, 2003, the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Dongjiang Column. In the nearly eight years since its opening, it has received approximately 1.9 million visitors, including 250,000 minors. Zhang Dejiang, member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and former Party Secretary of Guangdong Province, personally inspected the site, and some leaders from central ministries, provincial and municipal governments, as well as military officials, have visited for guidance. The Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall has become an important base for party member education and patriotic education in Huizhou and surrounding areas. Over the years, it has been successively named a Provincial Patriotic Education Base, Provincial National Defense Education Base, Provincial Red Tourism Demonstration Base, and Patriotic Education Base of the 75210 Military Unit.
