Colorful Birds and the Bamboo-Cypress Cool Garden

Located in Zhongpingwei Village at an altitude of over 900 meters on Nankun Mountain, there is a bamboo-cypress forest covering more than 100 acres. The bamboo-cypress trees resemble neither bamboo nor cypress but are unique to Nankun Mountain. Within the forest, the trees stand tall and dense, while the mountain breeze brings cool and refreshing air—thus earning the name “Bamboo-Cypress Cool Garden.” Legend says this garden was planted by the sacred bird of Nankun—the “Colorful Bird.”

Legend has it: In ancient times, the goddess Nüwa melted five-colored stones to mend the heavens, and the stone fragments fell to the mortal world, transforming into beautiful “colorful birds.” In search of their own paradise, flocks of these stunning birds flew over countless mountains and rivers, traversing vast landscapes. One day, they arrived at Nankun Mountain, where they found its unique geographical environment, pleasant climate, bamboo-covered hills, lush greenery stretching as far as the eye could see, flourishing grasses, blooming flowers, and a paradise teeming with joyful birds and animals—a true earthly heaven. Thus, the colorful birds settled in Zhongping Village, built nests, and bred offspring. They also plucked feathers and stuck them into the mountains. Over time, those colorful bird feathers grew into towering bamboo-cypress trees, forming the unique Bamboo-Cypress Cool Garden of Nankun.
