Baiwangkeng Revolutionary Site
The Baiwangkeng Revolutionary Site is a classic red tourism destination.
The Baiwangkeng Revolutionary Site is located at the Shanjia Village Committee, Pingling Town, Longmen County, Huizhou City, about 3 kilometers from the town center. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the site covers an area of approximately 3 square kilometers. The Baiwangkeng Revolutionary Site mainly consists of the former rest site of the Fourth Red Army Corps of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (commonly referred to as the Fourth Red Army Corps), the founding site of the Baiwangkeng Party Group and Peasant Association, the founding site of the Baiwangkeng People’s Armed Forces, the site where the Baiwangkeng people resisted Japanese forces, and the site of the Baiwangkeng counterattack battle. In October 2008, the Longmen County Committee of the Communist Party of China and the People's Government of Longmen County designated the Baiwangkeng Revolutionary Site as a Longmen County Patriotic Education Base.
At the Baiwangkeng Revolutionary Site, the well-preserved structure is the former rest site of the Fourth Red Army Corps at Xinwei (formerly known as Songlingwei). Xinwei has GPS coordinates of 23°41′02.8″N, 114°21′28.8″E, and an elevation of 88.8 meters. Facing northwest and situated southeast, Xinwei is a Qing Dynasty-era Hakka enclosed house with a layout of three halls, four wings, one threshing floor, and one pond.
On December 19, 1927, Division Commander Ye Yong led the Fourth Red Army Corps of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army from Huazhou County to Dapai in Longmen County. On the 20th of the same month, they entered Longmen County’s urban area and were active there. On the morning of the 27th, while passing through Baiwangkeng at the foot of the mountain in Pingling, they were warmly received by the local farmers, who cleared out rooms in Xinwei for the Fourth Red Army Corps’ division headquarters to use as offices and living quarters.
Xu Xiangqian, the political commissar of the Tenth Regiment of the Fourth Red Army Corps, dug a well for the farmers on the left side of Xinwei. The well is about 3 meters deep, with river stones and tiles laid at the bottom and originally earthen walls, featuring a circular shape. The local people call it the “Red Army Well.” On the 29th of the same month, the Fourth Red Army Corps withdrew from Baiwangkeng.
The historical sites of revolutionary activities in Baiwangkeng have been recorded in the book *The History of the People’s Revolutionary Struggle in Pingling*, compiled by the Pingling Town Committee of the Communist Party of China, Longmen County, and the Pingling Branch of the Longmen County Veterans Association.
The “Red Army Well” was renovated in the winter of 1948 by Lian Ying, head of the organizational department of the First Regiment of the Jiangbei Detachment of the Guangdong People’s Liberation Army. The well walls were lined with river stones, maintaining a circular shape, while the wellhead was enclosed with granite slabs, forming a square with sides measuring 0.68 meters.
