Former Residence of Liao Siguang

The Former Residence of Liao Siguang is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The "Zhoutian Liao House" was built in the early Qing Dynasty and is located in the Dongfeng group of Zhoutian Village, Qiuchang. In front of the enclosed house is a courtyard and a revolving gate, with a construction area of about 1,200 square meters. It is a small Hakka-style enclosed house featuring three halls, two wings, and a courtyard layout. The Liao clan residing in Zhoutian are descendants of Liao Deyuan, the founding ancestor of Xingning. As the "Zhoutian Liao House" is the former residence of the renowned female Long March heroine Liao Siguang, it was listed as a "Huizhou Cultural Relics Protection Unit" in 2004.

Entering the courtyard through the revolving gate, you can see three doors at the front. The central main door leads to the entrance hall, where the partition board above is inscribed with the four large characters “Guang Qian Yu Hou” (Shining Brightly for Future Generations). Passing through the middle hall, you will see the upper hall where ancestral tablets are placed, and the wall is inscribed with “You Qing Tang” (Hall of Celebration). In 2014, members of the Liao clan donated funds to renovate the ancestral hall and placed a stone lion on the roof of the entrance hall.

To the left of the ancestral hall is the "Former Residence of Liao Siguang." To commemorate Liao Siguang, later generations restored the collapsed wing room where she once lived, which had been in ruins, and it was completed and opened to the public on July 1, 2011. Ye Xuanping inscribed the plaque for the "Former Residence of Liao Siguang." The interior of the residence has been restored to its original appearance, including the kitchen and bedroom.

Liao Siguang, originally named Liao Jiao, was born in 1911 in Zhoutian Village. From a young age, she was sent to the Ye family as a child bride. At the age of 16, her husband died of dysentery, and she was regarded as a jinx by her in-laws and sent back to her parents’ home. In 1929, introduced by Ye Wenhua, she joined the Chinese Communist Youth League, and the Liao House became a secret revolutionary base. The Communist Youth League branch ran night schools, literacy classes, organized peasant associations, spread revolutionary ideas, and provided cover for the cadres traveling between the provincial and county party committees stationed in Hong Kong.
