The Former Site of the Establishment of the Hui-Bao People's Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps (Yuying Building) is a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Unit and a classic red tourism destination.
The Former Site of the Establishment of the Hui-Bao People's Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps (Yuying Building) is located to the left rear of the former residence of General Ye Ting in Zhoutian Village, Qiuchang Town, Huiyang District, Huizhou City.
In October 1938, after Japanese forces landed in Daya Bay, Huiyang County, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China sent a telegram to the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC and the Eighth Route Army Hong Kong Office, instructing them to establish guerrilla zones in the enemy-occupied areas of the Dongjiang region. In accordance with the directives from the Central Committee, Liao Chengzhi, head of the Eighth Route Army Hong Kong Office, and Liang Guang, Secretary of the Southeast Special Committee of the CPC, held multiple meetings in Hong Kong with leaders from the Hong Kong Municipal Committee of the CPC, the Seamen’s Committee, and the Southeast Special Committee. They decided that Zeng Sheng, Secretary of the Hong Kong Seamen’s Committee of the CPC, would lead efforts to organize a people’s anti-Japanese armed force in Huiyang. On October 24, Zeng Sheng, Xie Hechou, Zhou Boming, and others led a temporary working group composed of Communist Party members and progressive youths to Pingshan, Huiyang. On October 30, at Yangmuzhang in Pingshan, under the leadership of Zeng Sheng, a cadre meeting was convened with representatives from the Hong Kong-Huiyang Youth Return-to-Hometown Salvation Work Group and twelve party branches in Pingshan, Danshui, Yantian, and Shayuchong. The meeting officially announced the establishment of the Hui-Bao Working Committee of the CPC and simultaneously decided to form the Hui (yang) Bao (an) People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps. Zeng Sheng, Zhou Boming, Zheng Jin, and Ye Hansheng were tasked with organizing the unit.
To facilitate the legitimate and public activities of the troops, after negotiations and obtaining consent from the local Nationalist government forces, on December 2, the Hui-Bao Working Committee officially established the Hui-Bao People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps at Yuying Building. The Corps Commander was Zeng Sheng, the Political Commissar was Zhou Boming, and the Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff was Zheng Jin. The unit comprised a total of over 100 members.
Yuying Building was built by Ye Fuping, the younger brother of General Ye Ting. Constructed in the early 1930s, the building covers an area of 800 square meters, faces south with a north orientation, and features an earth-and-wood structure. It is symmetrically arranged, consisting of an upper and lower section that forms a small quadrangle courtyard. After the headquarters of the Hui-Bao People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps was relocated to Pingshan, the building remained unused for a long time. After the liberation, it has been under continuous protection by the government and local residents. The building houses over 120 cultural relics and photographs. Its left, right, and front sides are landscaped and extend toward the former residence of Ye Ting, the Reading Pavilion, and the Tengyun School, forming an impressive architectural complex.
In 2004, Yuying Building was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage protection unit by the Huizhou Municipal People’s Government, and in 2015, it was listed as a provincial-level cultural heritage protection unit by the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government.
