Pingyuan Grand Buddha Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Grand Buddha Temple is located in Fengchi Village, Dazhe Town, Pingyuan County, 2 kilometers from the county seat and beside the world’s largest natural Buddha.

The temple adopts the architectural style of temples from the Tang Dynasty, built against the mountain. It covers a planned total area of 66,770 square meters, with a total construction area of 18,495 square meters.

All the halls feature upturned eaves and carved beams, gleaming with gold and brilliant colors. Each hall is built higher than the last, creating a majestic stepped ascent. All the halls and pavilions are connected by corridors, so visitors can reach any part of the temple without being exposed to the sun on sunny days or getting wet on rainy days — just by entering through the temple gate. This showcases the ingenuity of its designers.

The Mahavira Hall is majestic, standing 22 meters high with a construction area of 1,960 square meters. It consists of 48 steps and 66 pillars, making it the largest Mahavira Hall in Asia to date. The four characters “大雄宝殿” (Mahavira Hall) were inscribed by the renowned Buddhist leader and outstanding calligrapher Zhao Puchu. At the center of the hall are three gilded statues: Sakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha, each standing 8.8 meters tall. The hall also houses the Eighteen Arhats and the Thousand-Armed Guanyin, all exquisitely crafted with lifelike expressions that leave all visitors in awe.

The Grand Buddha Temple currently houses a large collection of calligraphy and paintings by notable figures, as well as the sacred relics of Venerable Benhuan. It is the largest temple in Meizhou City and even the eastern Guangdong region, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking leisure, eco-tourism, or spiritual blessings.
