Hui Lou

Hui Lou is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

Hui Lou, also known as Shenmin Mansion, was built by overseas Chinese Wu Huigen, hence its name. Located in Xishui Village, Dongshi Town, Pingyuan County, it was constructed in the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924 AD). Its design and construction broke away from traditional Hakka residential concepts by placing less emphasis on security and more on incorporating Western architectural elements. The main structure follows the typical three-courtyard layout—upper, middle, and lower—commonly seen in Hakka homes, with the main gate serving as the central axis extending to both sides. The left and right wings resemble traditional side rooms (hengwu), but unlike classic hengwu, each side has two additional doors. The building is two stories high with a three-story façade, adopting a European style with balconies that protrude outward, giving Hui Lou a distinctive and unconventional appearance.

Xishui Village: Xishui Village, Dongshi Town, Pingyuan County, Meizhou City, is located 5 kilometers north of Dongshi Market. The village has jurisdiction over 16 villager groups, with 506 registered households and a population of 2,140. It covers a total area of 4.62 square kilometers, including 1,566 acres of arable land. The village enjoys a subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and annual rainfall of about 1,700 millimeters.
