Former Residence of Yao Ziqing

The former residence of Yao Ziqing is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The former residence of Yao Ziqing is located in Dunbei Village, Dazhe Town, Pingyuan County. Yao Ziqing (1909–1937), styled Ruozhen and also known as Zhongqi, was a native of Pingyuan County, Guangdong Province. In October 1926, he enrolled in the Sixth Entry Training Corps of the Whampoa Military Academy, and in July 1927, he advanced to the Infantry Third Company of the Second Corps as an officer cadet. In February 1929, he graduated from the Sixth Infantry Class and was assigned to the 52nd Division of the National Revolutionary Army as a company commander with the rank of captain. In 1934, he served as the deputy regimental commander of the same division with the rank of major. In 1935, he was reassigned as a battalion commander, and in 1936, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and took command of the Third Battalion of the 583rd Regiment, 292nd Brigade, 98th Division of the Army. From August 31 to September 7, 1937, he was ordered to defend Baoshan City. He fought fiercely against the Japanese army for seven days and nights. After intense street fighting and close combat, and due to being heavily outnumbered, Yao Ziqing and all the officers and soldiers of his battalion died heroically. The news shocked both China and the international community.
