Former Residence of Huang Meixing

The former residence of Huang Meixing is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The former residence of Huang Meixing is located at the end of the street in Dawu Village, Dongshi Town. Built in the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927) by the anti-Japanese general Huang Meixing, the residence faces southeast and is situated to the northwest. It measures 11.10 meters in width and 17.10 meters in depth, covering an area of 296.03 square meters. The structure consists of six rooms, two halls, two auxiliary rooms, and one courtyard, making it a typical example of Hakka “He Mian Gang” architecture. The house features mud-brick walls, a fir wood-tiled roof, granite edges, and a lime-soil foundation. It holds certain value for the study of Hakka architecture and for showcasing the patriotic spirit of General Huang Meixing. It is reported that after the outbreak of the “July 7th” War of Resistance in 1937, Huang Meixing was ordered to move his brigade to Shanghai and Songjiang. He fought bravely against the enemy and was fatally struck by a shell at the Baziqiao position, becoming the first general to die for his country during the Battle of Shanghai.

Dawu Village: Dawu Village in Pingyuan County, Meizhou City, is located 2 kilometers southwest of Dongshi Town. The village administers eight villager groups, with 459 registered households and a population of 1,590. The total area of the village is 7.86 square kilometers, including 2,280 mu of arable land. Dawu Village has an average annual temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and an annual rainfall of about 1,700 millimeters, characterized by a subtropical climate. Major cash crops include rice, peanuts, corn, and soybeans.
