Meizhou Thousand Buddha Pagoda

The Meizhou Thousand Buddha Pagoda is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The Thousand Buddha Pagoda is located atop Dadongyan Mountain in the eastern suburbs of Meizhou City. Built in the eighth year of the Dabao era (965 AD), it has a history of over a thousand years and is now a key cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The iron pagoda is divided into seven levels, stands 4.2 meters tall, and has a square shape with a base side length of 1.6 meters. It is cast from wrought iron, with 250 large and small Buddha statues on each side, totaling one thousand Buddhas on all four sides, hence the name Thousand Buddha Pagoda. To protect the iron pagoda, a new Thousand Buddha Pagoda was built above it on December 3, 1991. The entire pagoda is constructed from granite, stands nine stories tall at 36 meters, and has an octagonal shape, making it grand and spectacular. From the second to the eighth floor, the walls are inlaid with a thousand white marble Buddha statues, while the ninth floor houses a thousand gilded bronze Buddha statues. At the top of the pagoda rests a small seven-story stone pagoda, creating the artistic feature of “Three Thousand Buddha Pagodas” where there is a pagoda within a pagoda, a pagoda above a pagoda, and iron, jade, and gold Buddhas all contained within one pagoda.

The pagoda was originally located within Xiuhui Temple but was later destroyed. In the early years of the Qianlong reign, it was relocated to a mountain in the eastern suburbs of Meicheng by Jia Yingzhou official Wang Zhefu. In 1989, it was moved to the Putong Pagoda compound. In 1990, a new 36-meter-tall, nine-story pagoda was built in the Putong Pagoda compound. The first floor houses the iron Thousand Buddha Pagoda, the walls of the second to ninth floors are inlaid with a thousand white marble Buddha statues, and the top floor enshrines a thousand golden Buddha statues.
