Tomb of Hou Anguo

The Tomb of Hou Anguo is a Meizhou Municipal Cultural Heritage Protection Unit.

The Tomb of Hou Anguo is situated in Meijiang District, dating from the Qing Dynasty, and is categorized as an ancient tomb.

On January 13, 2014, the Meizhou Municipal People's Government announced that the Tomb of Hou Anguo was included in the second batch of Meizhou Municipal Cultural Heritage Protection Units.

Hou Anguo was originally from Ninghua County, Fujian Province. His birth and death dates are unknown, but he was a scholar-official who passed the imperial examination during the Southern Song Dynasty. In the first year of the Baoyou era (1253), he served as an education official (jiaoshou) in Meizhou, overseeing local education. Impressed by the simple and honest local customs, he chose to settle in Pan’guifang (present-day Xiashi) east of Meicheng. At that time, Meizhou was a mountainous region in southern China with limited access to Confucian teachings. Hou Anguo vigorously promoted education, giving lectures and teaching the principles of the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu) to his students. He also exempted the families of his pupils from corvée labor to encourage more people in Meizhou to study. From then on, literary culture in Meizhou gradually flourished.
