The Karnak Temple Complex is the oldest temple in Thebes, built over a long period of time and divided into three sections by brick walls. The central section is the best preserved and also the largest, covering an area of about 30 hectares. It is dedicated to the sun god Amon (Amon Temple in Karnak). The left section is dedicated to the god Montu, covering 2.5 hectares. Another section is dedicated to Mut, the wife of Amon, who is depicted as a vulture goddess—this part has not yet been excavated.

Surrounding the Karnak Temple are the Temple of Khonsu and other smaller temples. Each religious season’s ceremonies begin at the Karnak Temple and end at the Luxor Temple. There is a one-kilometer-long stone-paved avenue between the two, lined densely with statues of sacred rams, and the pavement is interspersed with some gold or silver foil-covered stone slabs that shimmer brightly.

The Karnak Temple is world-famous for its immense scale—it is the largest column-supported temple on Earth. The Great Hypostyle Hall of the Karnak Temple covers about 5,000 square meters, housing 134 stone columns arranged in 16 rows. The two central rows are particularly massive, each standing 21 meters tall with a diameter of 3.57 meters, wide enough to allow 100 people to stand on top. The column capitals are shaped like open papyrus flowers. These carved and painted stone pillars have stood here for dozens of centuries.

The stone pillars inside the Karnak Temple resemble an ancient forest. Only the high side windows formed by the difference in height between the central and side roofs provide lighting. After being partially blocked by beams and column capitals, the light grows progressively dimmer, creating a mysterious and oppressive atmosphere of “divine kingship” desired by the pharaohs. These colossal forms are awe-inspiring, and the spirit feels oppressed under the weight of the material—a sense of oppression that is precisely the starting point of worship. This is the artistic foundation of the Karnak Temple.
