Philae Temple

Introduction Philae is a small island in the Nile River south of the Aswan Dam, where a temple originally stood. When the British built the Aswan Dam in 1902, the island was flooded, and visitors could only view the temple's gates and columns that rose above the water by boat. In 1980, the Egyptian government decided to relocate the ancient monuments on the island to another one, restoring them to their original appearance. The Philae Temple houses some of the last discovered hieroglyphic inscriptions and vivid reliefs (as shown in the picture). Among those worshipped here are the goddess Hathor, goddess of wealth, and the goddess Isis, goddess of fertility. Legend has it that the goddess Isis had ten thousand names; she not only governed fertility but also served as the protector of all people, which is why she was highly revered by the ancient Egyptians. There are many tour operators in Aswan that offer all-inclusive trips to Philae, or you can go by taxi or motorboat on your own. Ticket / Opening Hours Visiting hours: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM
