Lake Nasser

Lake Nasser is a large reservoir located in southern Egypt and northern Sudan, and is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. Strictly speaking, only the part within Egyptian territory (which accounts for 83% of the total area) is called Lake Nasser, while the part in Sudan is known as "Lake Nubia" (Lake Nubia).

The name of Lake Nasser comes from Gamal Abdel Nasser, Egypt’s first president after independence, who oversaw the construction of the famous Aswan High Dam in the 1950s. The dam blocked the flow of the Nile River, causing the water level to rise and forming Lake Nasser. It is the seventh-largest reservoir in the world, approximately 550 kilometers long, widest near the Tropic of Cancer at about 35 kilometers, covering an area of 5,250 square kilometers, with a water storage capacity of 157 cubic kilometers.

At the northernmost outlet of Lake Nasser, the Nile River surges forward, rushing toward the Mediterranean Sea with unrestrained enthusiasm, much like the black pharaohs of the ancient Kingdom of Nubia who once led their armies northward to conquer Egypt. Today, Lake Nasser has become a renowned scenic area, with vast, boundless waters shimmering under the sun, and magnificent natural landscapes along its shores. Visitors can take a cruise to leisurely enjoy the picturesque views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
