Nubian Museum

In the 1960s, when the Aswan High Dam was being constructed, Egyptian archaeologists and archaeologists from around the world recognized the urgent need to launch a campaign to save Nubian civilization in order to preserve the vast number of artifacts discovered in tombs, temples, and tribal areas. Thus, the Nubian Museum was born.

The Nubian Museum is situated in the northern part of Aswan and opened in 1997. Covering an area of 50,000 square meters, it houses monumental items collected from various regions of Egypt during the first half of the 20th century in Nubia. The museum’s architecture and walls are designed in the style of ancient Nubian civilization, reflecting a strong traditional Nubian village architectural aesthetic. The collection includes over 3,000 artifacts from different periods, more than 50 of which date back to prehistoric times, showcasing the history of human activity and reflecting the traces and environment of human life during the Nubian civilization from the BC era to the 6th century AD. Visitors will find prehistoric caves with rock art, ancient Egyptian statues, obelisks, and column decorations, as well as complete Nubian houses.

Ranked among the top ten museums in Egypt, the Nubian Museum has played a significant role in promoting Nubian civilization and has made outstanding contributions to the global study of Nubian history and culture.
