Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is situated approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. In 1994, UNESCO designated it as a natural World Heritage Site. Spanning 331 square kilometers, the park is renowned for hosting half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Established in the early 1990s, Bwindi has achieved significant success in gorilla conservation.

According to statistics, there were fewer than 100 gorillas in the area by the late 1970s, but today their population has grown to around 300. In addition to mountain gorillas, the park is home to 90 species of mammals, over 300 bird species, more than 200 butterfly species, and several endangered animals including African elephants, chimpanzees, African green broadbills, Congo peafowl from the Musophagidae family, and a variety of striking swallowtail butterflies.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sits at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,600 meters. Around 1,500 meters, Rosaceae plants are widely distributed, while above 2,200 meters, tall trees from the Sapotaceae family thrive. It is one of Africa’s most biologically diverse rainforests and one of only two protected areas in East Africa where montane and lowland forests intermingle. The ancient forest blankets steep slopes, surrounded by valleys and patches of lowland woodland.
