Mount Elgon National Park is named after Mount Elgon, a volcanic mountain range located on the border between Uganda and Kenya, northeast of Lake Victoria. It has a diameter of 80 kilometers and covers an area of 3,500 square kilometers, featuring five main peaks with elevations of 4,321 meters, 4,302 meters, 4,222 meters, 4,211 meters, and 4,161 meters, making it one of the most prominent mountain ranges in the region.

Like Mount Elgon itself, Mount Elgon National Park spans both Uganda and Kenya. The Ugandan portion was designated as a national park by the government in 1992, covering an area of 1,110 square kilometers, while the Kenyan section spans 169 square kilometers and was established as a national park as early as 1986, making it one of the oldest in Kenya. The park still retains pristine natural scenery, with vast tracts of untouched forests, and is home to a rich diversity of wildlife including elephants, forest monkeys, buffaloes, leopards, and over 300 species of birds.
